about

Write to me nazli.akhtari@uwaterloo.ca.

Come home.

I am an artist and writer based in Tkaronto. My work broadly engages the archive, memory work, and image making in the context of SWANA diaspora. My first book manuscript in progress considers the queer archival work of contemporary image-making practices in the global Iranian diaspora. My second project funded by the SSHRC Insight Development Grant (2023-2025) considers the institutional incorporations of diasporic and minoritarian artistic practices in relation to the property logic of settler colonial empire across Turtle Island.

My writing has been published in the PublicTheatre JournalTheaterCamera Obscura: a Journal of Feminism, Culture, and Media StudiesJournal of Middle East Women’s StudiesGlobal Performance StudiesPerformance MattersMise-en-scène: The Journal of Film & Visual Narration, and Imagined Theatres. I’m currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Arts at the University of Waterloo where I teach courses on performance theory and archive based practice as well as topics on race, culture, and technology.
